What is “Copiapo for Christ?”

 

 

“Copiapo for Christ” is four-year evangelistic campaign designed to mobilize the churches and believers in the desert city of Copiapo, Chile to reach out, develop relationships with non-believers, and bring them to a saving faith in Christ Jesus.  In doing so, new churches will be started that in turn will want to start other churches.

Copiapo is a city of about 150,000 people, supported mostly by mining and agriculture.  Over the past six years there has been a population boom which has spurred the opening of new businesses in the city, and the city is expected to continue growing.  Copiapo is located in the Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world.  When the city receives 2 inches or more of rainfall during the year (a rare occurrence), a beautiful phenomenon occurs.  The desert around the city produces fields and fields of beautiful flowers from the seeds that have remained dormant for years.  People come from all over the world to witness this marvel of God’s creation.   We believe that the people of Copiapo are like the desert that surrounds them.  Although their hearts are dry and hard, with just a little bit of the Living Water that Christ offers, their lives will transform and blossom, producing abundant fruit.

 

The Campaign

 

God promised in Isaiah 43:19 to bring streams of water in the desert and the wasteland, and we believe He wants to bring streams of Living Water to the desert city of Copiapo, Chile.  John 7:38 says, “Whoever believes in me, the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from him.”  As churches in Copiapo are mobilized to reach out and bring people to saving faith in Jesus Christ, streams of Living Water will flow in this desert city and lives will blossom.

 

The Copiapo for Christ campaign will have two “streams” that will flow together, helping each other in reaching this city and the surrounding area for Christ.  The first “stream” will be the mobilization of the Chilean Baptist churches.  We will be forming church-planting teams and will be encouraging the churches to hold regular evangelistic events that will help the people develop relationships which will lead to new conversions, which will lead to new churches.

 

The second “stream” will be the use of volunteer mission teams from the United States and Canada.  It is our desire to have about 4 volunteer groups per year come to partner with Chilean Baptists to carry out evangelistic events throughout the city and surrounding areas.  These projects will be designed to enable churches and missionaries to develop in-roads into strategic neighborhoods in the city.  We will also use volunteer teams to carry out projects which the Chilean churches can later imitate in projects of their own.
